The Gyalyum Charitable Trust

Her Majesty Gyalyum Sangay Choden Wangchuck Charitable Trust

Her Majesty Sangay Choden Wangchuck, Queen Mother of Bhutan takes a personal interest and the inherent compassion towards the welfare of women, youth and Children of Bhutan has been deepened by her extensive interaction with all segments of the Bhutanese population, especially the disadvantaged and marginalized. Over the years Her Majesty has been actively involved in supporting social causes in the areas of health, education and culture.

For over 20 years Her Majesty has been at the forefront of spreading awareness on social issues. Her Majesty has, for a number of years now, toured the nation as the UNFPA Goodwill Ambassador and has provided a forum for discussion and interaction with people from all walks of life. She has visited the most remote parts of the country and touched the lives of all those she has met. Her Majesty campaigns against social stigmas related to many issues such as HIV-AIDS and the survivors of Gender Based Violence.

Her travels also opened her heart to the distress suffered by the people affected by issues, which have traditionally been ignored by Bhutanese Society. Her Majesty has an intuitive understanding of the constraints and the opportunities that people suffer in society in Bhutan. She recognizes the importance and the need to ensure that education and empowerment of marginalized sections of society are an integral part of the overall social and economic development process.

The importance of the preservation of Bhutan’s rich cultural heritage is also a priority for Her Majesty. The need to preserve and promote Bhutan’s traditional skills like textile weaving, which form the livelihood for many people, has been emphasized through her work with her cultural initiatives. Her Majesty has personally initiated and supported some key charities based on her interest in the welfare of her people and the preservation of Bhutan’s cultural heritage.

These individual charities have immense grassroots reach and have had a positive impact on Bhutanese Society as a whole and serve to play a crucial role in the positive development of Bhutan.

Her Majesty Gyalyum Sangay Choden Wangchuck Charitable Trust has been established to ensure the long-term sustainability of the charitable organizations and to ensure that the indispensible services provided by them will continue to expand positively benefit all sections of society. Her Majesty personally seeks to ensure the sustainability of the charities which fall under the aegis of the trust.
